This project entails the design of a 2,500 square meter hotel, onsen, restaurant, and lobby / activity area. The existing site sits within a natural reserve, consisting of several steep hillsides that terrace down towards a large, man-made lake. Inspired by a nearby ancient Japanese temple called Kasamori-Ji, this design preserves as much of the existing landscape as possible by lifting the buildings off of the site. This concept minimizes the amount of earthwork required to realize the project and provides each unit with an expansive view of the lake and forest beyond.

The structural frames required to realize this design inform the aesthetic for both the interior and exterior. Natural materials and colors are paired with these frames to create a relaxing environment from which to interact with nature and escape the busy lifestyle of nearby Tokyo.
